The economic justice initiative is set to begin in the 2021-2022 academic year. In close partnership with Harvard Law School’s Center for Health Law and Policy Innovation, the economic justice team will work on policy matters related to advocating for debt relief for socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers.
The Initiative will particularly focus on the socially disadvantaged farmers and rancher debt relief program established in the American Rescue Plan and build the case for it and similar programs through legal and historical research and data analysis. Specifically, the team will conduct research on the history of discrimination by USDA against BIPOC farmers and ranchers and examine recent program data for disparities in service provision. The goal of the Initiative will be to produce a report contextualizing the program and similar initiatives and may also develop policy recommendations. Students interested in learning more about the American Rescue Plan’s debt relief program and related litigation can read more on the FLPC blog.
