{"id":1190,"date":"2015-01-22T15:36:05","date_gmt":"2015-01-22T20:36:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/plap\/?p=1190"},"modified":"2015-06-22T16:29:17","modified_gmt":"2015-06-22T16:29:17","slug":"college-courses-in-washington-prisons-and-plaps-book-drive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/clinics.law.harvard.edu\/plap\/2015\/01\/22\/college-courses-in-washington-prisons-and-plaps-book-drive\/","title":{"rendered":"College Courses in Washington Prisons and PLAP&#8217;s Book Drive!"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/plap\/files\/2015\/01\/n-PRISONER-READING-large570.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1192\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/plap\/files\/2015\/01\/n-PRISONER-READING-large570.jpg\" alt=\"n-PRISONER-READING-large570\" width=\"570\" height=\"238\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A recent Seattle Times article highlighted the Freedom Education Project of Puget Sound (FEPPS), a program which offers inmates in Washington the opportunity of a college education: &#8220;Education does more than offer inmates a credential, &#8220;&#8230; it teaches them how to be the people we want our fellow citizens to be \u2014 thoughtful, critically aware of the world around them, disciplined and able to recognize authority.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This, plus the 2013 RAND Corp. study which concluded that &#8220;&#8230; every dollar spent on inmate education translated to $4 to $5 saved on re-incarceration&#8221; (along with many other reasons) are why PLAP is now holding a prison book drive! All donated books will be disseminated to prisons nationwide by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prisonbookprogram.org\/donatesection\/donate-books\/\" target=\"_blank\">Prison Book Program<\/a>, an organization run out of Quincy, MA that is dedicated to furthering the education of America&#8217;s incarcerated population.
