Florida DREAMER Potentially Being Deported-Released from Detention

Please see below for an announcement from Presente.org on the status of Shamir’s, a Florida DREAMer, immigration case:

We have an exciting update to share.  Last weekend, Shamir Ali was released from detention!

This victory could not have happened without you and your readiness to help a DREAMer that you may have never met.  Shamir’s case received national coverage in Spanish and English.  We collected over 4,000 signatures via petition and text message.  All of that in just 7 days!

While this has been a wonderful week for Shamir and his family, our work is not done.  Each week, the Obama administration deports thousands of people, mostly Latinos and people of color, including DREAM Act-eligible youth like Shamir. We’ll keep you updated on how you can take action but in the meantime please read a note from Shamir below:

“I’d like to thank everyone who signed the petition from the bottom of my heart.  Your support was undoubtedly the sole reason for my release.

I cannot explain to you in words how dark my days were right after I was detained.  The outpouring of love and support was beyond my wildest expectations.  Together, I hope, you can continue to support me by holding President Obama and his administration accountable for the massive deportations that have happened in the last few years.  Stay engaged so we can push for the end of DREAMer deportations as we wait for Congress to pass the DREAM Act.  Together we can end the injustice dealt to students here since they were minors.”

Thanks and ¡adelante!

Friends and allies,

It’s with a sad heart that I reach out to you. Shamir, a Florida Dreamer who has lived in the US since he was 7 years old, could be deported as early as Tuesday.

Click here to sign a petition asking ICE to cancel Shamir’s deportation. Please share it with your friends and networks — but there is more we need to do.

Obama promised not to deport Dreamers anymore. Secretary Napolitano recently said they will start piloting the implementation of the Morton memo in 3 weeks.
Unfortunately, Shamir doesn’t have 3 weeks. Shamir could be deported AT ANY TIME.

Over the past years we have done everything we can to fight for the rights of people who count the US as their only home. We have won great victories, suffered great losses, but always worked hard to bring our community together and highlight the great injustice that is being inflicted on Dreamers all over the country. Despite all that, they continue to try and take away our brothers and sisters. We are all Shamir….

In solidarity,

Student Immigrant Movement
